We are here for you

We understand that we are living in unprecedented times. Now, in addition to physical distancing, we must practice social connectedness. To protect the safety of our staff and participants we are all working remotely -- but trust us that we are still doing everything we can to accompany rural families in challenging times as they do the work that feeds the country. Please see below for program updates, contacts, resources, and action steps.

Program Updates. Last updated May 4, 2020

All programs (youth groups, classes, Justice Celebrations) are meeting virtually and the Rural Worker Education Centers are physically closed until the situation is deemed safe.

The Sowing Seeds of Justice Gala in New York City has been cancelled, and replaced by an exciting Virtual Event with the same honorees and musical guests. Allies from around the state can join in the fun! More information and tickets here.

We have not yet cancelled the Summer Day Programs in July. We are monitoring the situation closely and preparing contingency plans to replace them with virtual experiences as needed. Decisions will be made by region where the Day Programs take place (Long Island and Western NY).

Summer Overnight Camp will be replaced by a virtual experience. We will send out more information and applications soon to our camp families and partners.

Masks for Farmworkers Campaign

Farmworkers need masks to safely do their work. Too many do not have access to masks and other basic protections in their workplace. We have been collecting and distributing masks. Thank you to all who have donated so far! Contact one of our regional coordinators to arrange a mask donation.

    Take Action

Your supermarket shelves are restocked because each and every day, thousands of farmworkers across New York are putting in long shifts to ensure there is no interruption to our food supply. They are putting their lives at risk for us. And we are concerned about them. We need to take swift action to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of New York's farmworkers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today, we are calling on state lawmakers to:

  • Develop a coordinated plan to address the unique needs of the agricultural workforce, including accessible know-your-rights materials, free testing in rural communities, and food and clean water.
  • Require agricultural employers to inform workers about their rights to COVID-19-related benefits, like paid sick leave, paid family leave, and temporary disability.
  • Extend unemployment benefits to H-2A workers affected by COVID-19.
  • Provide direct financial assistance to farmworker families regardless of immigration status.
  • Mandate health and safety protocols specific to COVID-19 for agricultural operations and farm labor camps.
  • Here is what you need to do:
    1. Read the Worker Justice Center letter to Govenor Cuomo and the legislature here. RMM has signed on.
    2. Contact Governor Cuomo, your NY State Senator and Assembly Member today! Let them know that farmworkers are invaluable workers who urgently need protection in the face of COVID-19.
